Piezo rhinoplasty
An ultrasonic instrument for work on the bone of the nose. It is used when the procedure requires it, not as a mark of quality in itself.
What the piezo instrument does
A piezoelectric device turns current into ultrasonic vibration and passes it to a tip that cuts and shapes bone. In rhinoplasty that means work on the bony bridge and the nasal bones: osteotomy, removal of a hump, narrowing of the vault. Soft tissues — lining, cartilage, skin — are still treated with standard surgical instruments. Piezo is not an “operation without a knife” and is not a substitute for a surgical plan.
The surgeon chooses the instrument according to the anatomy in front of him. If the bone needs a controlled cut instead of a break, piezo has a place. If the procedure rests on the cartilage of the tip, the device stays in the drawer. The name on the page does not mean that every nose will be done with piezo.
Piezo does not change the cost outline by itself. The figure follows the scope of the procedure, not the brand of the device. Whoever asks only “do you do piezo” asks the wrong question. The right one is: does the bone need a cut or a break, and why.
Why bone is shaped with ultrasound instead of a chisel
Classical osteotomy goes with chisel and mallet: the bone is broken along a planned line. That remains a valid way of working. Piezo offers another cut — thinner, guided by the tip, with less scattered fracture when the bone is thick, asymmetrical or already changed. In revision, where the anatomy is disturbed, control of the line is often more important than speed.
Ultrasound does not make the surgeon more precise than his plan. A poor plan with piezo remains a poor plan. A well chosen chisel in experienced hands still does clean work. The difference is in the tool, not in the philosophy of the nose. Piezo is not the same as preservation rhinoplasty: one is an instrument for bone, the other is a decision whether the bridge will be kept or built again. At the examination both are said, separately. Preservation rhinoplasty
In revision, where the bone has already been fractured or is asymmetrical, control of the line is often more important than speed. Piezo can then help the cut to be guided rather than broken at random. Even then it remains a tool. The plan is still drawn by the examination, not by the device.
Swelling and bruising
Less scattered fracture can mean a tidier early course — less bruising around the eyes in the first week in some cases. That is not a rule and not a promise. Swelling of the tip, blockage and the pace of healing depend on the skin, the scope of the procedure and on you, not on the brand of the device. The splint still stays 7 to 12 days. The final shape still comes over months. Whoever chooses a surgeon by piezo chooses a catalogue; whoever chooses a plan chooses an outcome.
If someone tells you that piezo guarantees a shorter recovery or a “more natural” nose, that is a marketing layer, not surgery. At the examination you will hear whether the instrument will be used and why — or why not.
When piezo is not needed
A procedure on the tip of the nose alone — tip-plasty, correction of the columella, asymmetry of cartilage — does not touch the bony vault. Piezo then has nothing to cut. The same holds for a narrow procedure on the septum without the outer shape, and for cases in which the bone is not moved. Forcing ultrasound “because it is modern” lengthens the procedure without benefit.
A low, already thin hump is sometimes taken down without osteotomy of the vault. Soft, very mobile bone in some noses is still guided cleanly with a classical instrument. If the main problem is breathing in the valves or turbinates, piezo does not treat function. If the main problem is the skin of the tip, piezo will not thin it.
The honest limit is this: piezo is a tool for bone. It is not proof of skill, not a guarantee of less bruising and not a reason to operate. At the consultation the plan is drawn first — primary, revision, function — and only then is it said which instrument enters the theatre. If the plan stands without piezo, the procedure stands without piezo. A patient who asks for “piezo rhinoplasty” as a product receives a conversation about anatomy, not about the name of a device.
How the decision is made at the examination
At the examination the thickness of the bone, the height and asymmetry of the hump, whether the nose has already been operated on and whether the vault should be touched at all are seen. Only then is it said whether piezo will enter the theatre. A photograph from a message does not decide that.
If the bone needs a controlled cut — thick, asymmetrical or already fractured — ultrasound has a place. If the procedure is on the tip, the septum or the valves, the instrument stays out. That is not withholding a technique. It is a choice of tool according to the anatomy.
Piezo rhinoplasty in Zagreb is not a separate product and not a separate price list. The figure follows the scope of the procedure. The next step is the consultation: the plan, then the instrument — not the reverse.
If you come because of the name “piezo”, the examination still starts with anatomy. Bone, skin, septum and breathing determine whether ultrasound enters the theatre. If it does not, the procedure is no less valid. If it does, it is a tool, not a mark of quality.
Common questions
What is piezo rhinoplasty?
An ultrasonic instrument for work on the bone of the nose — osteotomy, removal of a hump, narrowing of the vault. Soft tissues are still treated with classical instruments. Piezo is not an operation without a knife and is not a substitute for a plan.
Does piezo guarantee less swelling and a faster recovery?
No. Less scattered fracture can mean a tidier early course in some noses. That is not a rule. Swelling of the tip, a splint of 7–12 days and the final shape over months depend on the skin and the scope, not on the brand of the device.
Is every nose done with piezo?
No. A procedure on the tip alone, a narrow correction of the septum or a case in which the bone is not moved have nothing for ultrasound to cut. The instrument is chosen after the examination, not from the title of a page.
Is piezo rhinoplasty more expensive?
Piezo does not change the price list by itself. The figure follows the scope, not the brand of the device. The ranges are on the fees page.
Is piezo the same as preservation rhinoplasty?
It is not. Piezo is an instrument for bone. Preservation is a decision whether the bridge will be kept or built again. They can be combined. Neither replaces the plan that is made at the examination.
Is piezo used in revision?
It can be, when the bone needs a controlled cut instead of a scattered fracture. It is not a rule. If the procedure is on the tip or the septum, ultrasound has nothing to cut. That is said after the examination.
